Mami | Zoki

Warnings: child death
Themes: friendship, magical girls

Memory One You are in a very warped place: a strange fusion of a child's idea of a cake bakery and a hospital. The walls are delicious layers of chocolate and strawberry, sugar crystals are at their feet, but medical syringes pop out of the walls and small candy-drop creatures wear nurse's hats. The dimension's appearance is like a cardboard cutout from another reality.

You are dressed in your yellow steampunk-style magical girl uniform and wielding her silver rifles. A strange creature sits on a table above you: her head is shaped like a bonbon candy, and she is small and cute. But that doesn't deter you: you use her rifle to knock the legs off the table and puts a bullet in her head, but this doesn't appear to do much at first.

No matter. The small candy creature tries to fly away, but you counter with a wall of bullets. You summon a ribbon to tie the candy witch in place, summon a cannon several times larger than you, and call out "TIRO FINALE!"

"All right!" Somewhere behind you, the voices of two girls around your age cheer. One sounds like Madoka.

The candy witch vibrates and looks ill as it absorbs the shot...and bursts free from the bonds, suddenly turning into a cartoony caterpillar-like creature with a clownish face and sharp teeth. Its disturbing face grins as it lunges at you, jaws open wide...and the last thing you see before oblivion are those terrifying teeth closing in on your head.

Memory Two You are seated on the floor of a rather cozy and nicely furnished apartment, sitting across a low glass table from another girl your age. The other girl is licking her fingers, and sports long red hair tied back messily with a black ribbon. The sweet aroma of peach pie floats through the air.

"How was it? My special peach pie?" You ask playfully.

"Amazing! On top of saving me, you feed me too? Wow, way to make a girl feel selfish," the redhead answers.

"But I wanted to invite you for tea. Don't worry about it, Sakura-san."

You are willing to brush it off, as always, but Ms. Sakura shakes her head and continues.

"Actually, I've been thinking...if I'm gonna be selfish, I might as well go for it. Mami-san, do you think I could be your student? It's just that you're really good at this magical girl thing, and I bet I could learn tons from ya. That is, if you wanted to."

Your cheeks turn slightly pink as you listen.

"I was sort of thinking the same thing. Except what I really want is a friend. Is that all right, Sakura-san?"

"All right? That's awesome! You're the best, teach me everything you know!"

You answer your new friend with a small laugh. "All right, then here's your first lesson: reviewing today's battle! Look sharp, we have to be in shape for next time."

"Aww, seriously? Well...fine, I guess I asked for this," Kyoko Sakura huffs, taking a small notebook from you. You radiate happiness as they get to work. Truly...nothing could be more perfect than this.

Memory Three There's a dark gloom over Mami's cozy little apartment. The large glass windows reveal the storms outside, and Mami is slumped on the floor in front of her glass table. A strange white cat-like creature sits on the table in front of her. She's radiating grief, clenching her hands over and over.

"Mami, have you calmed yourself?" asks the small white creature. It talks in an oddly cheery voice, even and positive no matter what things it says that would otherwise be emotional.

"Kyubey...tell me, what's going to happen to that boy's mother?" Mami whispers, just barely keeping from crying.

"It's impossible to say. She might keep searching for him, or she might give up. She'll never find him, after all. If someone dies inside a witch's barrier, no body is left behind. He'll forever be a missing child," it says matter-of-factly.

"If I got done in by a witch...if I died, no one would ever miss me, would they?" Mami whimpered.

"Yes. Magical girls most often fight alone inside witch's barriers, and if you were to die, that's most likely how it would happen."

"...I see..."

"But you can also save people if you work harder, Mami. You're a magical girl, after all."

Yes. She wasn't strong enough this time...but she will be. Even as the grief threatens to crush her, Mami clenches her fist in determination
