I'm afraid a Sharpedo is larger than a medium sized dog and so would not be allowed as an initial companion (though as the shop expands there will be opportunity to buy larger animal companions). Feel free to chose another item (something to fit in a rucksack) or companion (no bigger than a medium sized dog) for Mako to bring with him!
