Memory 3
Enna isn’t even allowed near them as their final days come. No one is.
Her parents fell ill some weeks ago- The dry fever, it’s called. It’s a plague, a terrible one, but most of those who were born and raised in Corvus don’t get sick. Outbreaks are rare, there haven’t been any in centuries until now, but it got her parents. Now, all she can do is stare at the distant hut where the sick are kept.
The world is as bright as ever. There’s light, there’s sound, there’s smells. She doesn't care. Even her extra sense is trying to pull her away, to find treasure. She ignores it.
Soon, a man leaves the hut. She recognizes him- Or rather, the clothes he wears. The all-black robes, intertwined with feathers, and the mask shaped like a raven’s head- A plague doctor, devoted to Corvus, trying to protect everyone from the plague.
Seeing her, standing as close as she's allowed to get, he takes a moment to remove his robe and mask. He places them by the hut, she sees, he’s rubbed something on himself to cleanse it- she never knew what it was, she tried to see once but it smelled too bad to get close-
And then, she realizes, he has set the hut on fire.
She doesn’t remember much of what happened after that. She knows what the fire means- Those who were in the hut had passed from the plague. People say that when you die, your soul goes to a great ocean, and crossing that ocean brings you to a land of joy, but she doesn’t know if she believes that. Dead is dead, after all.
But she wants to. She wants to, right now, so badly. All she knows is that she's crying, the doctor has his hand on her shoulder, trying to be comforting, but it doesn’t help, things are touching her and it’s too much, and there’s so much noise and the fire is burning and-
She can’t move. All she can do is cry.
