Setting

SETTING

THE TRAIN
Voidtrecker Express predominantly takes place on a jet black steam train. The name is written in gold on the sides of the engine. The driver's cab has blacked out windows, the doors are sealed and no amount of strength will open them. There is no way from the passenger coaches into the driver's cab.

Each carriage has outer doors at either end that lead into a small entrance area. The 'front' entrance of each carriage has an on-board shop. There are toilets scattered throughout the carriages. All doors are operated by the press of a button. Carriages are joined by two doors with a gap in between, this gap has dark walls and is colder than the train in general. There is also a distant sound, almost like choral singing... but it's probably just the wind.

NETWORK, SIGNS
There is an ICP in every carriage (on both floors of double carriages), except the quiet coach. Sleeper carriages have an ICP in the corridor and one in each room. Signs and such throughout the train (except those made by characters) will be in braille as well as written-word. The 'voice' and 'video' buttons on the ICPs will also have braille translations. The corridors throughout the train will have slightly raised pathway indicators for ease of moving around without sight.

There are elegantly written wayfaring signs on the walls of the train corridors. Such as: Sleeper Cars --> | Kitchen <-- etc.

NOTABLE PASSENGER ADDITIONS
→ There are transgates - round teleportation devices - set around the train to allow quicker transport between carriages. Set-up can be viewed here.

→ There are clocks in different carriages that tell the time (21 hours). They can so far be found in: Lower Kitchen, lower dining, standard coach, sports gym, and lower library.

→ There's one garden box in each of the carriages (minus Sleepers and Medical) put as out of the way as possible. That's one for Luggage, Dressing, Games, Gym, Standard, Quiet, Dining, and Stores. The Garden carriage has four boxes so far, one for each corner.

They are made out of suitcases or wooden crates stolen from the store room. Most of them look relatively empty! Though some have a couple of flowers. They have soil or paper materials to act like soil on the top levels where the seeds are ready to germinate. A pipe is sticking out of the soil on one side and the opposite side has a hole in the side to let excess water out. If a person were to dig in them they would find rocks/pebbles at the bottom where the water goes and a mat or cloth to separate the rocks from the soil material.

→ Further character additions, and a spreadsheet version!

CARRIAGES
Quick list of + link to carriages

ENGINE

Completely sealed. Whoever is driving this thing, they are never seen. On the wall where it joins the store room there is a painted sign "Do not attack this wall". It has an attempt of an angry face painted next to it, but it mostly just looks cute.

FOOD STORES/WASH UTILITIES

A double decker coach with stairs at both ends. The bottom level is a windowless store room. It holds a huge chest freezer (with a safety release so no one can get locked in) and industrial sized fridge. The fridge has a couple of pictures glued to it with makeshift putty.

There are crates and shelves filled with supplies. Fresh food restocks every two weeks at stations. Shelves have barriers to stop stock from falling.

Upstairs has windows! There are two large washing machines; one at each end. Between them there are washing lines, baskets of pegs and fans to help dry everything.

KITCHENS

A double decker carriage with stairs on each end. Both floors have an aisle that run through the middle of it.

The bottom floor has a long bank of industrial ovens running along one side of the aisle, the other side has a long metal work surface. Underneath the work top are cupboards that hold pans and oven trays. There are cooking implements hung up from racking on the back wall.

Upstairs follows a similar arrangement. Two work banks with an aisle in the middle. One side are ten large sinks with drying racking above them. The other is another work surface, this has smaller kitchen appliances (toasters, kettles, makeshift milk frother etc). There are cupboards underneath for crockery.

A dumb waiter connects both floors. Neither floor has windows. There is an ICP on both floors that show the recipes for the food of the month. There may be other recipes around as well to try. Look here for a list of usual ingredients.

DINING CARRIAGES

Another double decker carriage. Both floors are identical in design, and these carriages have windows looking out at the void. Both floors have one huge wooden table stretching from end to end, with wooden benches running along each side. There is a cupboard at each end of the carriage with cutlery, glasses and mugs (if people put them back after washing!). There is also a tea and coffee machine on each floor.

COACH A: QUIET COACHES

This carriage is a double carriage with a staircase at each end. Both floors have a corridor running down the left hand side. Each floor holds five booths with glass doors (ten altogether). The booths have two comfy benches facing each other. Each bench holds three people easily, or more in a squeeze! The booths lock from the inside and are completely sound-proofed. There is no ICP screen in this carriage and the only announcements to come through the speakers are those from the train driver.

Two of the booths on the bottom floor have been merged together in some horrible demolition work. Inside there are shelves and the table is moved so it is a work space. There are curtains across the glass and a lock on the door. One of the booths on the top floor has greater perriwinkle grown across the window and light for privacy and darkness.

COACH B: STANDARD COACH

This carriage has an aisle down the centre and there are rows of three seats on the left and two on the right. There are two table seats on each side. There is overhead storage running along each side.

There is a simple desktop computer and a printer set up for those with devices that they can print from.

COACH C: SPORTS GYM

Again this carriage is single coach with a corridor running down the left side and a door on the wall to the right. Inside there is a gymnasium, narrower and longer than is perhaps practical. On each end there is a basket-ball hoop and goalposts that can be moved around. In the back wall there is a cupboard that opens with a press of a button. It is full of balls. Basket-balls, footballs, rugby balls, tennis balls, softballs, baseballs, volleyballs, cricket balls, squash balls, american footballs. If it is a sport ball it is in this cupboard. There are things to go with them: rackets, sticks etc, a net which when you investigate can be hooked to the side walls at different heights to make a tennis net or a volleyball net or a net for another ball game! There is even a ping pong table at the back of the cupboard with bats!

The ICP in this carriage has instructions for a whole range of ball games! You might just have to... adapt to the long narrow space a bit...

COACH D: MEDICAL CARRIAGES

This carriage is a double carriage At the back of the carriage there is a staircase but at the front there is a lift connecting the two floors. Both floors have a corridor running down the left hand side and on the right there are three compartments.

On the bottom floor, two compartments have doors with windows. These are examination rooms, with a simple bed, chair, scales, and basic medical equipment such as a blood pressure monitor and stethoscope. Inside a cupboard is a medical kit more advanced than those in the corridors of the train. There are also basic medications, painkillers and anti-histamines. There are also a couple of epinephrine autoinjectors (epipens but not branded as such, obviously). The ICP in these compartments have information about a range of illnesses and their treatments.

The third compartment is a surgical bay. Though the equipment is basic it is enough that wounds can be sewn and minor procedures undertaken. The ICP in this room has instructions for more complicated medical procedures but also carries warnings that advanced medical training is advised and surgery should only be carried out by senior medics.

Upstairs, there are four compartments. Each has a glass window and door, though there is a curtain to pull across for privacy. These are recovery rooms, each with a medical bed and an accessible toilet/shower. On the ICP in each of these rooms, it is possible to register a passenger as recovering here. Doing so will not return them to their own bed each morning, but remain in the recovery bed. However, that passenger's ticket will not allow them out of the recovery bay until they are ‘discharged’, and only one passenger can be registered there at any one time.

Check here for character additions. There is a list of medical supplies here, and a medical roster.

COACH E: GAME CARRIAGES

Coach E is a double carriage with stairs going up on either side.

As you enter the lower floor, you will see there are no seats in this carriage. There are two tables, low enough that people can sit on the floor around them, and large enough to fit about eight people around. There are cushions scattered around, and even a few beanbags to sit on. There are wooden chests around the walls as well as a couple of shelving units. The chests and the shelves are full of games. All the board-games and card games you can think of, from chess to hungry hippos.

There are silly games and serious tactical games. (As a note, any game based on a canon that might exist on the train won’t be here but a similar-but-different game can be. Likewise any game with place names will be similar in style and play but the names will not be any that any passenger will recognise.) There are a disproportional amount of train-themed board games, obviously. There is a whole suitcase of Duel Monster cards, alongside a handwritten note explaining the rules, how to build a deck and to see Yugi or Kaiba for help.

Upstairs there are no seats, and the carriage is split into two halves. One half has some large games, twister, giant snakes and ladders, lawn jenga, massive connect four and more large silly games that need a bit of extra space. The ICP in this carriage has the rules for all the games. A flight simulator, arcade game 'Lethal Enforcer', and a DDR machine have also been added by passengers.

The second half is separated by a rope barrier. This area has four virtual reality headsets, and a variety of controllers. There is an ICP where they can be set up to play one of four games.

CARRIAGE F: STONE GARDEN

The most striking thing abut carriage F is that the walls and ceiling are made of a transparent material. The ceiling is a dome shape, a single metal beam running down the centre from one end to another. Drawn on the transparent walls there are pictures of ants, some made to look like superheroes from Cassie Lang's world.

The carriage itself is a rock garden. There are not many flowers or living plants but instead statues, rockeries and mosaics. In the centre of the carriage there is a pond with a simple stone fountain in its middle, filled with multi-coloured lotuses. There are four streams breaking off, flowing to each corner of the carriage.

Stony paths wind around the carriage with small bridges crossing the streams. There are stone benches along the paths and around the pond. The light of the void reflects off the water that gives this place an an odd look. But despite that, it is a peaceful environment.

Next to the door at the front end of the train there is a panel simply labelled 'weather'. This allows for some basic options: rain, snow, wind and heat and random. The 'weather' comes from pipes at the top of the carriage and is a bit clumsy but will make weather effects throughout the stone garden.

CARRIAGE G: GREENHOUSE

Like the garden carriage the walls and ceiling are made of a transparent material. The ceiling is a dome shape, a single metal beam runs from one end to another, mounted on this beam are large bright lights with roses growing across it, winding around the lights.

The aisle of grass runs down the middle, from one door to the next. Stone paths branch off around raised beds of soil, filled with the fruits, flowers, bushes and even trees that passengers have planted over their stay. There are trays stacked to the side, gardening tools, as well as some extra bulbs and flowering seeds.

Up against the glass walls there is scaffolding, running up to where the ceiling begins to curve. There are two narrow walkways running across the scaffolding and ladders allowing gardeners to tend to their plants no matter where they decide to grow them.

The ICP in this carriage has a very basic 'how to' guide or gardening as well as some handy tips. Check here for character additions.

CARRIAGE H: CINEMA

This carriage is as tall as a double carriage, but has only the one floor. Instead it features sloped seating. To enter the carriage from the sleeper carriage side you must first go upstairs. You enter at the top of the carriage, in the centre aisle with paired seating sloping downwards on either side. On the opposite wall there is a large screen, and once you get to ground level there's a door to the left of it, allowing you into the next carriage.

On the right of the screen is an ICP. In this carriage, it has a catalogue of films and TV series. There are hundreds to chose from, and an option for audio description on each title. For more information go here!

Check here for character additions.

CARRIAGE I: TRAINING GYM

This carriage is very similar to carriage C. A long narrow space walled off from the corridor. The cupboard however is not filled with balls. Instead it has mats, soft hand held pads for training with, training dummies, some balancing beams and even a springboard. It also has large blocks that look a little like what you might find in a children's play centre but can be used to make obstacle courses or provide cover in training exercises. There are two climbing aparatus next to the wall that can be swung out to create a climbing frame. (Imagine this but larger and not for primary school children!)

CARRIAGE J: MUSIC CARRIAGES

This a double carriage. On the bottom floor is a corridor running along one side, with a door to enter the carriage itself. Up the stairs, the carriage fills the whole space.

Downstairs there are a variety of instruments. Mostly smaller instruments (a guitar is the largest instrument there). There are a couple of each type. There is however an entire box of recorders, another box of panpipes and a box of mixed small percussion instruments (symbols, shakers etc). There are music stands small stools to sit on are stacked along the wall. There are folders of various sheet music as well as some ‘learn to play’ books.

Along the front wall of the carriage there is a series of screens, these are not ICP points but rather music libraries. There are a lot of songs to chose from and these points can work as a juke box to pipe music into the downstairs of the carriage or easily transfer music to their SCA.

There are four storage crates near these screens where they will find pairs of earphones which will easily synch to their SCA. Each box holds earphones of each team colour.

The music itself is a wide variety of genres, there might be songs they know. There will be many more they do not. Every genre they can think of any others they would never have even imagined!

Upstairs is a performance space. The aisle goes down the middle of the carriage as usual and there are low backed chairs in pairs on either side. Half way down the carriage a chunk of rows are missing and the floor is raised as a stage. To one side there is a piano. The other half of the carriage there are another set of seats facing the stage. It is possible to control the lights in this carriage and there is some basic stage lights as well as curtains that close off both sides of the stage from the audience.

CARRIAGE K: LIBRARIES

This a double carriage. On the bottom floor there is a corridor running along one side, with a door to enter the carriage itself in the middle of the corridor. Up the stairs on either end of the carriage, the space is open, relatively.

Downstairs appears similar to a public library. The walls are painted brightly and lined with shelves, most of which are empty. Labels indicate that fiction books should be stored here. The wall facing the door is alternating windows looking out into the Void, and posters that seem to be large, blown-up book covers for the more popular fiction books in the train.

Four tables with linked chairs are spaced throughout the car, each one painted one of the team colours, and beanbag chairs similar to those found in the Games carriage can also be seen scattered in a pile in one corner.

A little wooden train with shelves built into it winds its way through the tables, its shelves filled with all of the previously-purchased Merry Little Void Train literature and the first book of several of the encountered but unpurchased MLVT series, including several colouring books. There's room on its shelves for far more than it currently contains. Kheli the rabbit is painted leaning out of the engine window, waving.

There is also an ornate fireplace. It is set in dark stone into the front wall of the carriage. There is a cute rug in front of it and there are beanbags and other comfortable reading pillows. The fire isn't real- it is holographic and controlled by a dial on the wall but everything about it feels real, it gives off heat, it flickers like fire, it even smells like a log burning fire giving the library a very homey feel to it.

Along the far wall to the right are two scanning machines, which can do the following: register new books - as a helpful tutorial on the screen will inform you; provide summaries of books if given a specific title; or check books out if presented with a valid ticket. Passengers can have up to eight books checked out at a time; if someone walks out of the carriage carrying a book not checked out by them, the ICP speakers in that carriage will beep obnoxiously for ten seconds.

Upstairs resembles an academic library. The wall next to the stairs is a similar bank of windows as downstairs, although lacking the colourful posters, instead dotted with landscape paintings of previously visited worlds and unknown worlds both. Rows of shelves divide the space into six smaller workspaces, each with a single-person desk with lamp and bookstand and another window above, bracketed by shelves on either side. The bookshelves muffle sound, creating semi-private spaces around each desk.

The shelves are empty, with labels on each shelf indicating that non-fiction books belong up here.

For more information on the library please see here. Check here for character additions.

CARRIAGE L: ARMOURY

This room is a single carriage, with a corridor running down the left hand side and three doors leading into the carriage itself.

Around the outer walls and, making a solid back to back wall down what would usually be the centre aisle, are tall lockers in all four team colours. They have a shelf at the top that can be folded down.

Each locker is open initially and to claim a locker passengers need only insert their ticket into a slot in the door, this registers the locker as theirs as their ticket will be needed to open and use that locker. There is an information plaque on the wall near each entrance explaining this. Each passenger can claim one locker.

In addition there are five much larger lockers, one in each team colour and one in a mix of all four colours. The team-coloured lockers can be opened only by a member of the correct team. The largest one can be registered by anyone who puts a ticket into it- there is no limit to how many people can be registered as using this locker.

COACH M: SPA

This coach is a single coach. There is a corridor running on the left hand side with a door at either end of the carriage to lead into the spa itself. The main feature is a large, square, heated pool in three split tiers in the centre of the carriage. The pool can probably fit five strangers comfortably, or more at an awkward or familiar squeeze. The decor is pastel tiles and rich, pale wood, with long mirrors and sunlamps spaced along the walkways beside the pool.

At the back of the carriage there are two massage tables and a shelving unit with fluffy towels and various scented oils and lotions. On the other side of the pool - the front of the carriage - there are a row of ergonomic loungers, as well as a closed-off booth. This booth has a sliding train door and, inside, passengers will find a simple sauna large enough to fit a couple of people in at a time.

The ICP in this carriage can be programmed to play relaxing music or nature sounds like running water or birdsong. There is also a teaching course on massage techniques that consists of three hour-long lessons split into basic, intermediate, and advanced. There are team-coloured bathing suits and trunks in a small closet next to the entrances to the carriage.

COACH O: LAB

The lab carriage is a single carriage with the aisle going down the centre. There are six rooms, three of them containing benches and stools but otherwise empty at first. There are a set of two emergency showers/wash rooms, a room with basic tools for machine work and a storage room full of the equipment needed for a variety of scientific endeavours.

COACH P: ART

This carriage is a single carriage, with the standard corridor with doors on each end. To one side there are a set of tables and chairs, with two large sets of cupboards. In one is a variety of paper types, plain and coloured, along with painting pots (oil, acrylic, watercolour, and gouache), brushes, charcoals, pencils, and tools for erasing and sharpening. There are also ink pens and brushes, as well as manga screentones.

In the next cupboard is a space for putting away easels inside, as well as palettes, and also a selection of different sized canvases. Some clay can be found on the higher shelf. There's a sink set in the corner for washing up at, and some aprons with a train symbol on the breast.

On the right side is a larger table, another cupboard, and two clips that hold in place removable mannequins. Here people can work on sewing, with the cupboard holding a simple selection of sewing needles, tape measures, sharp-tipped scissors, a basic selection of threads, seam rippers, and whatever else you may find in a beginner's sewing kit. Basic white fabric is also supplied, as well as one with a simple train-pattern.

Around the centre is a free space, usually occupied by pottery wheels. A whiteboard sits in plain view on the wall with marker pens, as well as a small bookcase next to it. Very basic drawing books can be found here, with room for passengers to add their own. The walls are in pastel colouring, even the doors, of soft oranges, pinks and blues.

COACH Q: STABLES & KENNELS

The Stable & Kennels carriage is a double carriage. On the first floor, there is a set of stairs to one side, and a fence that opens up to six stables. On the side without stairs are two large cupboards, filled with brushes, shovels and buckets. Food and bedding can also be stored here, but those as well as feed must be bought. You must go through the aisle to get to the other side of the carriage.

Upstairs are where the kennels are kept, stacked crates. There are also smaller crates for smaller animals to be put in, and this area is laid out the same as the stables. In one corner (inside the fencing) is a washing station that can be walked into, and a door closed behind.

Inside the walk-in washing station the floor to be risen depending on the required height: this can be used for washing, or now as a grooming table. The hose has a few different features and allows for an easier adjusting of temperature and spray styles, and there is a pole above the station with a leash so that animals can be restrained.

Along with the grooming brushes are now wool shears and nail clippers. Inside the cupboards with the buckets and food are some large and small blankets, a mix of toys meant for animals, and a collapsible skirting table.

It's a simple set-up, and any bigger animals that can't fit on the grooming station will need to be worked on inside a spare stable. There are some clips for harnesses and leashes to be attached if necessary.

COACH R: DANCE STUDIO

This carriage is a double carriage. The bottom floor has a corridor running along one side with three doors leading into the carriage itself. The three doors all lead into a compartment, the carriage split into three dance spaces separated by sliding doors that can be pulled back to create a bigger space. There are no windows in this carriage and instead the outer wall is made of mirrors, with a bar running across it’s length. In each space there are a series of cubby holes, with simple ballet and tap shoes in various sizes. There are also some simple poi and dancing ribbons. All come in varieties of the team colours. There are speakers that connect to their SCAs, allowing them to play music through them.

Upstairs there is a stage, with rows of seats and a curtain. There are also speakers here so that music can accompany their performances. Above the stage there is a simple plaque. It reads. “Olivia’s Studio.”

COACH S: SWIMMING POOL

Entering the pool carriage (a singular with a raised roof) will bring you first into a corridor, a set of double doors at either end; beside these doors is a plaque that reads "S'reee's Bathtub". Going on through, there is a pool nearly the width of an entire carriage, allowing for space to walk around. At one end - the shallow end - is a set of cubby holes to one side, to allow clothes to be stored; beside them are a row of showers that double as a place to change. There is also a cupboard squeezed between both where flotation devices, balls, and other swimming-related fun can be found inside. A pump is included for inflating, and there are also breathing gills found, for those who want to breathe underwater.

Over on the other side is the deep end of the pool, and also a raised jumping board with a ladder. Tiny foam fish float in the water, and there is a panel near the doors that allows the temperature to be changed from cold to warm.

SLEEP CARS THREE-ONE

Double carriages. The corridors runs down the left side of this carriage, with stairs at either end. There are five sleeping cabins on each floor. Each one has a black screen on it that has the names of the occupants-- the letters are usually white but if a character is on hiatus (where they have disappeared) or dropped (before they 'leave' at the next station) then the name is in gold.

To enter your room you swipe your ticket against the screen and the door opens. You can only access your own room (unless invited in by someone). For more information go here.

DRESSING CAR

The next carriage along seems odd. In the centre of the carriage there is a floor to ceiling mirrored cuboid, it is devoid of most of its glass on one side and the glass left on the other sides is shattered, holding on despite a web of cracks. Along the right there are no windows, instead two huge wardrobes with four drawers at the bottom. They are locked. In-between the wardrobes there are five small cubicles with curtains, reminiscent of a store dressing room.

The left hand side has windows but every other one is a mirror and has a vanity table in front of it with a padded stool. There are are a few other padded stools dotted around. Unlike the sensible hardwood floors of the rest of the train this carriage has a thick carpet and smells strongly of jasmine. It is full of spider webs and spider silk hammocks, though there is a six foot high walkway left so people can access the carriage.

TRIAGE

This carriage is a double carriage. At the back of the car is a staircase, but at the front there's a lift connecting the two floors. Both floors have a corridor running down the left hand side.

The bottom floor is one large carriage, though there are curved curtain rails on the ceiling so that thick, grey curtains can be pulled around areas to cut them off. There are four medical beds that can be wheeled around or locked in place, and a handful of chairs. There are cupboards with medical equipment, primarily for first aid.

Upstairs there are two surgical bays. Though the equipment is basic, it is enough that wounds can be sewn and minor procedures undertaken. The ICP in this room has instructions for more complicated medical procedures but also carries warnings that advanced medical training is advised and surgery should only be carried out by senior medics.

Check here for character additions.

LUGGAGE

The very rear carriage is filled with luggage. Suitcases, rucksacks and trunks. All are empty unless characters put things in them. Characters appear here after they die or return from hiatus. It smells quite strongly of cigarette smoke.

A mini-kitchen has been built into the side of the luggage car closest to where people enter. There's a simple counter against the wall and some basic shelving. A mini-fridge (inside) sits on the floor for the butter and milk, and a trunk houses a few plates, saucers, and teacups. A kettle and toaster has been nicked from the larger kitchen. Basics like bread, jams, some cheese is kept down this way, and whatever people add. There's jars for the sugar, coffee, and teas too.

A chalkboard has bee set up for people to leave any messages about what needs refilling or if they've added anything. Also there's a note on the wall about taking down what you use to the kitchen to be cleaned.

For the time being water is stored in jars.
