Library

LIBRARY
This a double carriage. On the bottom floor there is a corridor running along one side, with a door to enter the carriage itself in the middle of the corridor. Up the stairs on either end of the carriage, the space is open, relatively.

Downstairs appears similar to a public library. The walls are painted brightly and lined with shelves, most of which are empty. Labels indicate that fiction books should be stored here. The wall facing the door is alternating windows looking out into the Void, and posters that seem to be large, blown-up book covers for the more popular fiction books in the train.

Four tables with linked chairs are spaced throughout the car, each one painted one of the team colours, and beanbag chairs similar to those found in the Games carriage can also be seen scattered in a pile in one corner.

A little wooden train with shelves built into it winds its way through the tables, its shelves filled with all of the previously-purchased Merry Little Void Train literature and the first book of several of the encountered but unpurchased MLVT series, including several colouring books. There's room on its shelves for far more than it currently contains. Kheli the rabbit is painted leaning out of the engine window, waving.

Along the far wall to the right are two scanning machines, which can do the following: register new books - as a helpful tutorial on the screen will inform you; provide summaries of books if given a specific title; or check books out if presented with a valid ticket. Passengers can have up to eight books checked out at a time; if someone walks out of the carriage carrying a book not checked out by them, the ICP speakers in that carriage will beep obnoxiously for ten seconds.

Upstairs resembles an academic library. The wall next to the stairs is a similar bank of windows as downstairs, although lacking the colourful posters, instead dotted with landscape paintings of previously visited worlds and unknown worlds both. Rows of shelves divide the space into six smaller workspaces, each with a single-person desk with lamp and bookstand and another window above, bracketed by shelves on either side. The bookshelves muffle sound, creating semi-private spaces around each desk.

The shelves are empty, with labels on each shelf indicating that non-fiction books belong up here.
We will not OOCly be tracking books being checked in and out. If a book is not being returned, please reply to that book's comment to let people know that it isn't available.

Please comment below with any books your character is registering with the library computers, using the following form, to either the fiction or non-fiction top level and under the correct genre or subsection with the book's title as the subject header:

FICTION: Merry Little Voidtrain ~ Action/Adventure ~ Crime ~ War/Epic ~ Drama/Slice Of Life ~ Horror

Pets and Companions

Animals, familiars and other NPC creatures can be either brought along with a character's arrival, or purchased from the On-Board Shop. This page is to help everyone keep track of who owns what, where. Click the creature's name to see the full information posted by the owner's player.

Animal Rules
As of July 2021

Small (30)
These are small domestic animals, such as mice, rabbits, ferrets, geckos, birds such as parakeets or pigeons, turtles and fish. Some miniature dogs and cats can be purchased here, but they would be handbag pets - munchkins and chihuahuas. The rule of thumb for small animal purchases is that they should be able to live comfortably in a cage or tank.

Medium (100)
These are the more generic domestic pet animals. Cats, small or medium-sized dogs, badgers, foxes, monkeys. Miniature goats and deer, large birds such as eagles or vultures. The rule of thumb for medium animal purchases is that they should be a manageable pet size. An adult human should be able to lift and handle them without difficulty. Animals may be larger in height or length than the examples given, provided they are not bulky and cannot be mounts.

If an animal is capable of evolving or transforming into a larger animal, the catalyst for this transformation will cost the difference between the animal's current and new size category. A creature's adult size is what is considered for purchase categories.

We cannot give specific sizes for Pokemon due to the inconsistencies in source - anime, game etc, so the rules of thumb should be applied in good faith. The important thing is to ensure that you keep the size of your fictional animals consistent in play.

Starter companions, which take up the character's starting item slot, are an exception, and can be any size of creature provided they are not large enough and/or sturdy enough to be a mount.

Summoned creatures are not affected by these rules provided their summoning is for a limited duration.

Player Plot Calendar

Here is the place for scheduling player-driven events!

If you are planning a gathering- be that a party, a meeting or another big, noticeable event that you plan to be a big mingle post then please fill out the following form. These do not need mod approval but we would like them on the calendar so people can check when things are happening and what is going on that they might want their characters to join in on!

If you are planning a plot that is more serious and will effect a large number of passengers or large parts of the train please fill in the following form. These events do need mod approval. We know that sometimes such things come quickly from IC situations but try and give us some notice so people can be informed ooc and have time to plan and that we can make sure that safeguards such as opt outs are all in place!

Alternatively if you have an idea for a big player plot that would warrant an event let us know here what you have in mind and we will work with you to make your dream a reality!

Character Initiatives

CHARACTER INITIATIVES

As happens when you put a bunch of people on a train, there are levels of organisation, attempts to give out information and other player-led things.

Here is a listing of them. If your character is doing something for the train as a whole (welcome leaflets, attempts at organisations, etc), then post here so they can be added! For groups, please give an IC contact so people know who to reach out to if they want to get involved.

ORGANISATIONS

~ Fight Club: While not a real club, it's a collection of individuals who host training sessions to train characters skills in fighting. A Fight Club' log is occasionally put up for such activities. Those offering lessons can be found here.

~ White Squad: A group formed by Spider (Kumoko) from the premise of Yuffie Kisaragi's Black Squad, White Squad are individuals who wear white armbands that denote that they carry medical supplies, have healing abilities, are doctors or otherwise trained in medicine.

~ Communal Mission Supplies: These are supplies being collected with an inventory list compiled in the armoury carriage. This includes equipment both mystical and mundane, medical supplies, food and drink, and boosting consumables. (IC contact: Tidus and Leia Organa)

TEAM BASED ORGANISATION

~ Purple Team Overview: An IC/OOC available pamphlet on the usual tasks of Purple Team, and the available roles to take on during missions. People are free to help in whatever way they like. (Contact: Hera Syndulla, Tidus, Inigo)

~ Purple Team Inventory: Supplies always available during missions (Contact: Trunks and Cassie Cage)

~ Blue Team Survey: A survey for Blue Team-interested parties to fill out (Contact: Lan Wangji)

~ Red team: Is very loosely ran, Thanatos and Elidibus make sure everyone has healing items and are around to help with questions but don't try and give instructions or orders. (Contact: Thanatos)

PUBLICATIONS

SERVICES

~ There is a desktop computer set up in the standard coach. It has a simple operating system with a writing program, a basic drawing program (think like paint), a program for spreadsheets and a solitaire game. It doesn't have any access to any Internet or to the ICP but will be able to connect to the printer. It also has a plug in webcam.

~ There is a printer set up in the standard coach for those who wish to print things. They will need to have a device that they can type on and print from, like the desktop computer. There is also a digital photo printer.

~ There is an Earth 3D Printer and a Kree 3D printer in the standard carriage.

~ For a more comprehensive list of everything people are offering in regards to training and services, please look here.

~ A Bounty Board was set up by Mami Tomoe for passengers to request items they would like from the on-board point shop, in the event that they don't have enough points, and in the hopes that someone who does will help them out.

FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT

~ In the cinema there is a table-top popcorn machine. Bags of kernels appear in the luggage carriage to refill it. (IC Contact: Romeo)

Cinema

CINEMA

This carriage is as tall as a double carriage, but has only the one floor. Instead, it features sloped seating. To enter the carriage from the sleeper carriage side, you must first go upstairs. You enter at the top of the carriage, in the centre aisle, with paired seating sloping downwards on either side. On the opposite wall there is a large screen and there is a door to the left of the screen once you get to ground level, to allow you into the next carriage.

There are some spider web hammocks at the back, allowing for lounging without being too in the way of viewing.

On the right of the screen there is an ICP and in this carriage it has a catalogue of films and TV series. There are hundreds to choose from.

Given the variety of footage available, you can decide what you want your characters to watch. Bear in mind, nothing is going to be quite what they know from home. Actors will be different (many won't be human). They might find a couple of familiar films, but most will be different, new and somewhat strange. Beware the fourth wall! Use your common sense; a good rule of thumb is the more likely characters from a film are to be in roleplay, the less the film in the cinema can be anything like the original.

So for example, whilst there are no doubt many superhero films in the catalogue, any featuring existing superheroes will not be. Broad story themes can be similar, but make your own superheroes up! Likewise there may be a space opera, it might even have laser swords, but that is as close to Star Wars as it will get.

Films that are very unlikely to have characters showing up can be shown a bit more true to themselves. There is also the option of course to make a completely new film up!

For the most part, you can just go with whatever, but if you have a great idea or want to share a film that you've thought of, feel free to post story/plot ideas here.

Starting from the month of Quicksand (March 2022), documentaries are available. These are an eclectic mix, from sports documentaries to 'how it works' pieces on different technology, to histories of random worlds. There is a little on the void - on the history and basics of void travel, and you can assume if there is a book in the library about a subject, they can find a documentary about it! There is nothing about the Voidtrecker's homeworld, or the Voidtrecker Express itself.

Here are some examples to start you off:

MOVIE EXAMPLES: (Click to show)
Sing Cat Sing!

An animated film about cats flying fighter jets and engaging in epic karaoke battles. The songs are annoyingly catchy and there are even dance moves to copy! The plot is a bit... non-existent. But it is a lot of fun.

Silence Without

A high-tension horror film about the final hours of a doomed space station. Three friends desperately try to escape their fate as systems fail and the hostile realities of space set in.

Tilt of an Eye

A period drama, silent and in black and white. Very pretentious, clearly won a lot of whatever its origin world's version of Oscars were. It tells the story of forbidden love between two members of warring factions of a psionic insect species.

Merry Little Voidtrain

The adventures of everyone's favourite green and magenta train and her best friend Kheli the rabbit! This bright children's cartoon runs for 26 seasons and has five feature length films. Kheli and her voidtrain travel the multiverse to help people and make new friends. All the people on all the worlds are animals. It is the type of children's cartoon that is very watchable by adults, it has strong but simple plot lines and its messaging is clear without being hammered home. Be kind, have adventures and do small things to make the worlds better. It does however have an incredibly annoying and catchy theme song, which cannot be skipped.

Star Hunter

A well-written series about a detective who chases criminals through the multiverse. Lydi is a detective who started off a simple space cop, until one case changed things. Soon she is world hopping, trying to solve the case of her life.

Bees on a Train

Despite the spoofy name, this is a disaster horror film. Set on a world that seems to have a mix of different human and nonhuman people, it is set on a regular land train travelling across a vast country.

Unfortunately for everyone, one of the passengers is a smuggler and is transporting a hive of Zanti bees he has brought in from off-planet. Zanti bees are a rare and endangered species from a far distant planet. They are a protected species and their honey is said to be fit for gods. They are also extremely deadly.

The bees get loose, chaos ensues. The train is sealed to prevent the bees escaping. The film cuts between the passengers, trying to fend off and hide from a swarm of bees on a train that refuses to stop, and an emergency meeting between decision makers trying to solve the problem.

Do they allow a train full of people to die? Do they risk harming a protected species of bees? Do they allow the bees out into the world? Can they be contained?

Meanwhile a train-load of people are being hunted by eighty thousand bees.

Games

VR GAMES

The upper carriage of the games carriages has an area sectioned off for virtual reality games. It has its own ICP, and four headsets and controllers to play them on. The available games are as follows:
Knight Quest: A game that can either be played on single adventure mode or with the other three headsets in a campaign mode. It is a typical fantasy rpg about a young hero who is searching for a magical item to save the world. The story is simple but fun and engaging. The hero has a sword and shield and fighting in this game requires some physical skill, but practice makes perfect!

Space Racer: A multiplayer game where you race your friends on spacecraft through crazy galaxy type obstacle courses. Throwing alien fish at each other is not only permitted, but encouraged.

Star rise over Gulati: A very serious alien fighting game, you fight in a small fighter craft and have to protect a planet called Gulati. It is very difficult, you need very quick reaction times and small mistakes or misfires can lead to the planets demise or your own craft’s destruction. Try not to rage quit.

Crisis on...: This game can be played with two to four players. It is essentially a crisis simulator mixed with an escape room. You can choose the scenario (the bridge of a space ship, a camp in a jungle, a high rise building, a sailing ship etc), where you're then thrown into the middle of some crisis. Teamwork and a cool head are important, as is using the surroundings wisely.

Recipes

The month of Symphony has the key ingredient of kidney beans.

The following recipes are available on the ICPs in the Kitchen carriage, under the Recipes option.

    ~ Dal Makhani

    ~ Chilli Con Carne

    ~ Veggie Traybake

It can be assumed that the ingredients for all of these recipes can be found in the stores, as well as basics such as bread, oats, flour, pasta, noodles, rice, milk, eggs, tea, coffee etc. From the second half of Poi, there are also vegan alternatives for any staples such as butter, milk, cheese, eggs and yogurt, as well as substitutes for anything needed for the recipes of the month.

~ From the second half of the month of Poi (February 2022), there is a wider selection of teas that is refreshed each platform day: assam, darjeeling, chamomile, chai, matcha, genmaicha arrive each month but there are two or three more quirky teas each month.

~ From the month of Quicksand (March 2022), there is a selection of meats available. The cuts are simple and it needs to be used relatively sparingly but there is venison, chicken, turkey, bacon and turkey bacon and cod on top of any meat or fish for use in the recipes of the month.

Characters are of course free to make their own food with the ingredients if they don't want to follow the recipes. There are a number of vegetable and fruit crops in the greenhouse. There are extra recipes here.

A list of train provided foods are here.

Character Shenanigans!

Sometimes things happen that may have consequences further down the line. Sometimes characters decide to do things that might have immidiate reprecussion. As mods we want to have our fingers on the pulse of the game as it were, but we are also aware that we won't be able to read every single thing!

So that's where this post comes in. If your character has done something 'noticable' that you think we might need to know about, throw us a link here. Some might require a response, some will just be noted.

Example: "Over *here* my character is trying to smash the windows of the engine!"

Sometimes you might have an idea in mind that you believe will have consequences and be in the midst of writing the thread, however you want to know what those consequences will be for threads going forward. Or you might still be in the planning stages and would like to know how things might pan out. That's also what this post is for!

Example: "At the end of this event my character is planning to not rejoin the train and instead ride off into the sunset! What happens?"

Ask away!
